The Windhoek Rotaract Club hosted several soup kitchens for the elderly residing
within
Gysblok
community
in
close
proximity
of
the
Oponganda
Centre
during
the
winter
season
of 2018 (June – August). The club would prepare hearty soups and serve them with brötchens.
The Windhoek Rotaract club works under the auspices of “Service above Self”.
As a result one of the aims of the soup kitchen was to serve the community within the Gysblok
by providing them with a warm meal as well as provide them some company during the cold
afternoons. This allowed the elderly to socialise with one another as well as with the
Rotaracters present.
Every fortnight the club prepared soup and welcomed approximately 40 elders.
The senior citizens from the Gysblok community attended the soup kitchen
and were accompanied by their grandkids.
The
club
also
donated
clothes
to
those
who
attended the soup kitchen.
Each beneficiary was initially given a 5-item maximum, as there were some
leftover items they were then permitted to take addition items..
At
the
end
of
the
winter
period
Windhoek
Rotaract
had
its
last
soup
kitchen
for
the
2018
as
it
is
getting
warmer,
on
18
August
there
was
be
a
60’s
cake
party
instead
that
the
Rotaract
club
assisted
with,
which
was
facilitated
by
Mr.
Eckart
from
the
Oponganda
Trust.
A special thank you is to be given to the Rotarians from the
Auas Valley Rotary club who came to support the club with this
soup kitchen.
